St Mildred’s Bay had an Easter Egg Hunt before the half term! The children scavenged in the sensory garden for plastic eggs which were full of sweets and parts of a riddle. The children had to solve a series of riddles taking them all around the school including to see Mrs Farbrace, who had the final riddle, which revealed their Eggs were in the ACE room! They also created Easter egg stained glass windows for the class. A fun filled half day for everybody involved, we hope everyone had a great Easter Break! 🐣

Year 1 and 2 spent last term learning how to make decisions for their Geography topic. The children asked lots of questions, set criteria, conducted research, collected data about the weather and decided what type of trees they should plant. They also had to consider where in the school grounds we should plant them. They decided on apple trees, choosing species that are less likely to contract diseases and chose our school forestry area to plant them, as it is secure and offers protection, shade and sunlight to allow the trees to grow well. The children also had to think about how we were going to buy the trees and transport them to school, who was going to dig the holes for us (Mr Pettit got that job!) and who was going to make sure they were looked after. Everyone had an amazing time planting our tree's and we can't wait to watch them grow! 🌿

The Engineering club, sponsored by South Eastern Rail, was in full swing before the half term! The children were making good headway with their builds. Designs had been completed and the construction of the carriages was underway. KS1 had started to paint their carriages and use saws to create their axles. KS2 were beginning to make the many components to make their chassis, which will require many pulleys, a motor and a battery pack to make it move both backwards and forwards. In week 1 of Term 5 we will be joined by a real-life engineer from South Eastern Rail, who will be guiding the children through the tricky parts of assembly.

This term the school council have been looking at litter and trying to make Newlands and the surrounding area a cleaner place to be. The school council signed up for "The Great Big School Clean". The classes in the school have been learning about litter in PSHE this week and how in the UK over 2 million pieces of litter are dropped a day! The school council wanted to lead by example by completing a litter pick in the school today. The children started at the sensory garden, and worked their way around the border of the school field into forest school where lots of rubbish is blown into the school grounds from outside. In total, we collected over 100 pieces of litter in 20 minutes of our lunch time, including snack wrappers, plastic bags and even a nappy that had been thrown over the fence into a bush at forest school. After our pick the children reflected. One child said "it is so sad there is so much rubbish in our school. It takes moments to pick it up and put it in the bin." Many other students on their lunch break were inspired and wanted to join in, which is why Mr Foley has printed more of the sheets that will be sent home so if the children get a free moment during the holidays, they can get involved and clean their local area. Well done to the school council, for starting to make a difference. #teamnewlands #GBSchoolClean #LitterHereos #LoveWhereYouLive

St Mildreds took a trip to a local supermarket to round up their Thrive lessons with Miss Cornwall around fantasy and reality. Miss Cornwall has been working with the children of St Mildreds to gain an idea on what a well-rounded food shop looks like and how much it costs. The students had very high expectations on what some items on the list may cost, as you can see in our first draft of their shopping list, and were pleasantly surprised to find out that they were in fact a lot cheaper! Everybody thoroughly enjoyed their supermarket trip, and the attending staff would like to say a huge well done to all the students who participated for their fantastic behaviour! Mr Foley was very proud of the children. 'They were all well behaved, used great manners and showed great responsibility throughout. They were great examples of the amazing children at Newlands!' A big thank you also to Ramsgate Asda for accommodating us and doing all they could to support our students.

After the recent Netflix programme Adolescence it was apparent how children use emojis to have full conversations with each other, without adults being aware of what is being said. Please see a number of posters that highlight the meanings behind them. Please understand that context matters and that the meaning of the emoji can vary based on the conversation. It is essential to consider the surrounding text, previous messages and relationships between the people communicating.

On Wednesday 19th March, our Year 5/6 boys took part in the annual TKAT football league - held here at Newlands. They competed against other schools in our region, hoping for qualification to the 'Finals Day' held at Leyton Orient. In their first game, they faced off against Drapers Mills. After conceding a good goal early, the boys responded with a fantastic team goal in the closing minutes - passing through the entire team to equalise. The game finished 1-1 with good momentum to take into the second game. However, they were matched up against a very strong Salmestone team, and despite bright sparks, fell to a 3-0 loss thanks to some amazing football from their opponents. Needing a win in their last game, Newlands took on Dame Janet. In a back and forth game, both teams came very close but the score remained deadlocked at 0-0. However, it was Dame Janet who took the spoils, scoring with the last kick of the game to clinch a 1-0 victory. Despite the results, Mr Bowman and Miss O'Hara were very proud of the effort and team spirit the Newlands Boys showed throughout the day! Next week it is the girls turn - hoping they can fare better and win that illusive qualification to 'Finals Day'!

This week has been Diversity Week in St. Mildred's Bay and Minnis Bay, and the children have been learning all about the Holi Festival. The children had the opportunity to learn about why the Holi Festival is celebrated by Hindu's before participating in our very own Holi celebration. The children's enthusiasm and dance skills were incredible to watch as they participated in learning a bollywood-style dance. After our dance, all the children were very excited as they went outside, ready to finish our Holi Festival celebrations with powdered paint. Everyone was completely covered in a mixture of wonderful colours! 🌈 Please see Facebook for more pictures.

At Newlands we believe that reading is a fundamental skill in your child's progression. To help with your child's ability to read we use the Read Write Inc (RWI) programme, which is a proven phonics programme that ensures early success in reading, writing and spelling. Here is a slideshow explaining some of the key terminology your child might use at home; as well as the groupings for RWI, which the children are assigned to based on their ability and not their age; and videos on how to get the most from reading with your child at home.
