This week Minnis Bay went to Dumpton Gap beach as part of their learning about 'coast to country'. The children thoroughly enjoyed collaborating on some impressive sand art, making everything from sandcastles to mermaids. They then enjoyed a problem-solving competition; the children had to collect rocks and pebbles and try to build the tallest tower. The class were exceptionally well behaved and everyone had a fantastic time. ☀

We would like to say a huge thank you to all the parents who completed the Active Lives Survey back in March. Thanks to your help, alongside our classes, we managed to secure lots of credits with Sport England to purchase a wide variety of sports equipment, including: skipping ropes, bouncy hoppers, cricket sets, parachute, giant snakes and ladders, plastic rackets and a selection of balls. We are putting these resources to good use during lunchtimes, so the children have lots of exciting activities to enjoy. 😊

Throughout terms 4 - 6 a number of children have been working hard to design and build their own carriage. We have been working alongside an engineer from SouthEastern Railway, who has been guiding and supporting the children and helping with any problem solving dilemmas they have faced along the way! KS1 pupils had to build a chassis and use string to provide a braking system for moving forwards and backwards. KS2 had to make a battery powered motor system to drive forward and in reverse. On Wednesday 9th July these children attended a celebration event at Ramsgate Leisure Centre where they had the opportunity to talk with professional engineers, test their carriages and observe the work of other children from many schools across the region. We even had two winners on the day! 🏅

As the summer holiday approaches, Kent Police would like to notify parents of a current concern over children using catapults, possibly in response to social media. There has been an increase in the number of reports received relating to animals and wildlife being targeted, injured or damaged by objects fired from catapults. While carrying a catapult is not a criminal offence, its use may lead to criminal liability depending on the circumstances, for example under: • Section 1 of the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981 (intentionally killing or injuring any wild bird); • Section 4 of the Animal Welfare Act 2006 (causing an animal to suffer); • Section 1 of the Wild Mammals (Protection) Act 1996 (causing unnecessary suffering to any wild mammal); • Section 1 of the Prevention of Crime Act 1953 (unlawfully having any offensive weapon in a public place, meaning any article made or adapted for use for causing injury to a person, or intended to do so); and • Section 1 of the Criminal Damage Act 1971 (intentionally or recklessly damaging property) Kent Police would like to share the following advice: 1. Dissuade your children from leaving home with a catapult. 2. Explain to your children that using a catapult to cause damage or harm is a criminal offence. 3. If you wish to dispose of a catapult, contact your local beat officer who will be able to assist (details can be found at www.kent.police.uk).

Last week we were very lucky to have Vanessa, a volunteer from the RNLI, come into Newlands to deliver a presentation about Water Safety at the beach. The children learned all about lifeguards and the importance of their role in ensuring we stay safe at the beach. The children especially enjoyed trying on the lifeguard uniform. This presentation came at a perfect time, with the incredibly hot weather; our children should now know how to stay safe when cooling down on the beach!

Last week, Minnis Bay went to the Granville Theatre to watch ‘The Smeds and the Smoos’. The children really enjoyed the show, becoming captivated by the characters and the storyline. Mr Bailey said “The children were exceptionally well behaved, as they sat beautifully throughout the performance, and it was a joy to see them participate with the characters during the show.

**Summer Reading Challenge** Over the Summer holidays it is important to continue to encourage children to read outloud regularly to ensure they don't lose the pace, fluency and expression they have worked so hard to build over the school year. Our local Kent Libraries are offering a free challenge to continue to foster children's love of reading over the holidays. Simply visit the local library in person or online to register your child's interest and as an additional challenge Mrs Musgrove, Newlands phonics lead, is offering a reward to every child who presents her with their certificate or badge after the summer holidays. Who will be the first to complete the challenge? How many books can you read over the holidays? The challenge is on! Follow the link for more information. https://www.kent.gov.uk/leisure-and-community/libraries/summer-reading-challenge?sfnsn=scwspmo

Newlands Primary School Staff Run Race for Life, Raising Over £2,800 for Cancer Research Staff members from Newlands Primary School in Ramsgate laced up their running shoes last weekend to take part in the Race for Life event at Herne Bay, all in support of Cancer Research UK. Their efforts paid off in a big way, raising an impressive £2,350 — with an additional £517.50 secured through Gift Aid contributions, bringing the total to £2,867.50. The team, made up of teaching and support staff, completed the run in honour of loved ones affected by cancer and to contribute to the ongoing fight against the disease. Their participation not only showcased the school’s commitment to community and charity, but also inspired pupils and families to support the cause. The staff were cheered on by colleagues, pupils, and families, all of whom played a role in supporting the fundraising effort. Headteacher Mr Bailey said: “We’re incredibly proud of our staff for coming together to support such an important cause. Their dedication and determination were truly heart-warming and the generosity shown by our school community has been overwhelming. Cancer touches so many lives, including those within our own school community.” The money raised will go towards finding treatments and offer hope to millions of people affected by cancer across the UK.

It’s been so hot this week, so Mr Foley has made some adaptations to help students stay cool, focussed and regulated in the heat. After the children completed their TEACCH task in the morning, they were allowed to fill their empty tray with water to put their feet into to keep them cool at the desk for learning. During bucket time the children made their own fans to keep them cool which were a big hit and Mr Foley worked with the PE coaches to organise a game of rounders which used cold wet sponges instead of balls to allow PE to go ahead but keep the children cool! It's small adaptations like this which allow students to be successful despite the hot weather.

St Mildred’s Bay have been reading and using the colour monster book all year to discuss their emotions. On sports day, the class read the book again to remind themselves of the colours and emotions, then worked together to make Mr Foley’s mascot race costume. It came out great and the class enjoyed laughing at Mr Foley running in it along with all the other teachers in their costumes!

We were delighted to meet our new reception class for 2025-26 at our Teddy Bear's Picnic yesterday. The children were very excited as they had the opportunity to explore their future classroom; especially enjoying the Mud Kitchen, Sand Area and Water Area. It was fantastic to see so many smiley faces during the event and we look forward to seeing the children again next week for our Stay and Play session. We hope all the parents and children enjoyed it as much as our adults did! 🥰

This week we have been very fortunate to have teamed up with Ursuline College to help support us in our sporting events. Ursuline have provided Newlands with some incredible Sports Leaders, who have coached the children throughout their sporting activities, during Sports Day and our Reception Sports Morning. Their fantastic enthusiasm, patience and knowledge was extremely helpful in enabling all children to succeed at all the activities, and most importantly have fun!

Last week Minnis Bay celebrated Diversity Week by learning about the Japanese festival Um Ni Ho (Ocean Day). Firstly, the children learned about Japanese culture, identifying the capital, key clothing Japanese people wear and traditional food they eat. Then the children focused on learning about the Ocean; what it is, how it is important it is, why we need to look after it and how we can help protect it. The children made posters, illustrating the message ‘save our oceans’, and then participated in their own ‘clean up’ around the forest school area. Great work Minnis Bay! #TeamNewlands
