Please see  full policy below.

At Newlands we have two specially designed Reception classes, equipped to meet the needs of four-year-olds.  Children start in a reception class in the September before their fifth birthday.

The reception classes offer children a happy beginning to their school life.

Emphasis is placed on play activities together with rhymes, songs, stories and discussions and we also help them to learn to record some of their findings and thoughts.

Our main aims are to:

  • Stimulate their imagination and creativity
  • Enrich language development
  • Form a basis of mathematical understanding
  • Encourage the development of manipulative skills
  • Offer the chance to explore different materials
  • Develop muscular strength and co-ordination
  • Create habits of listening and concentrating
  • Establish the use of symbols and patterns which form the basis of reading and writing
  • Extend their understanding of science and the world around them
  • Respond to their needs to explore through their senses
  • Above all, we want to help the children learn to respect and enjoy the companionship of other children and adults, develop their self-confidence and evolve a sense of security within the school routine.

If you would like your child to attend our school, please see full details of our admission arrangements below.

Applying for a Reception place for September (4&5 year olds)

If you would like your child to start school with us you can:

apply by post  – the form is available to download and print from the website above.

You can apply for up to 3 schools, putting them in order of preference. It’s in your best interests to list 3 schools. Naming only 1 school does not guarantee your child a place at that school or give your child priority for a place over another child, neither does naming a school more than once.

For advice call 03000 41 21 21 or email kentonlineadmissions@kent.gov.uk.

Please note: Application acceptance dates change yearly, please check the above website or contact KCC admissions (using the details above) to find out more.

Would you like your child to move schools?

Have you just moved in the area and would like a school place for your child?

Please complete a “Request for a School Place” form and an “In Year Admissions” form and return these to the school marked for the attention of the Admissions Officer. You can do this either by hand, by post or by email, please see below for contact details. Once we have received your application forms you will be invited for a walk-around appointment with a member of our senior leadership team, you will get a chance to see the school.

Timetable for appeals – in the event of Oversubscription.

If your child is due to start primary, infant or junior school in 2019 you can appeal between 16 April and 21 May 2019 to guarantee that your appeal will be heard by 23 July 2019.  For applications made in the normal admission round, appeals must be heard within 40 school days of the deadline for lodging appeals.  For late applications, appeals should be heard within 40 schools days from the deadline for lodging appeals where possible, or within 30 schools days of the appeals being lodged.

Your appeal request should state your reasons for your request and any additional information/documentation/appendices should be submitted five days before the Hearing to allow time for it to be copied and distributed to all the interested parties. At least 10 working days before your appeal, unless you choose to waive this right, you will be sent detailed information regarding the process and also the date, time, place and names of the independent panel members who will hear the appeal.

The school is unable to guarantee that any original work/evidence/folders, submitted as part of the appeal, will be returned. Appellants may wish to submit copies in advance and then take important original documents verifying evidence to the appeal.

If you require any further information, please do not hesitate to contact the school office.
